The Sense of Smell and the Letter “D”

Books:

Today’s theme was the Sense of Smell! We read the books: What’s That Awful Smell? by Heather Tekavec and Gladys Goes Out to Lunch by Derek Anderson. We talked about different smells – how they can be good smells or bad smells, and what our favorite smells are.

We talked about the letter “D” this week. We discussed what it looks like, how to draw it, what sound it makes, and words that start with it.

Craft:

Since we are talking about the sense of smell today, I made some homemade playdough, colored it, and put essential oils in each one to have a different scent. You can stop by the library to pick up your playdough kit, while supplies last, or you can make your own with your own scents! As you play, see if your child can identify the scent correctly. Do you think they used the coloring of the playdough as a clue? Do they like the smell? What can they think of that reminds them of that smell?
