Hibernation
Happy Friday everyone! Can you believe there are only 2 more weeks until Christmas? This year, the holidays are going to look a lot different, but there are so many ways that we can still make it special for our families. I’ll add some ideas down below!
Hibernation
This week we talked about hibernation – this would be a fun topic for you to explore further with your children à you can talk about which animals hibernate, what they do to prepare, where they hibernate and for how long, and why they hibernate. It’s supposed to get cold this weekend and even snow a few days this week. I think it would be fun to make a fort in your house and pretend like you are going to hibernate!
Books:
We read: Good Night, Grizzle Grump by Aaron Blecha and I don’t Want to Go to Sleep by Dev Petty. In Good Night, Grizzle Grump, Grizzle Grump wants to find a place to hibernate for the long winter, but everywhere he tries to sleep, some animal is making a very loud noise. He finally finds a nice, dark cave to sleep in and falls into a very deep sleep, but he snores so loudly that the other animals in the forest now can’t sleep. You could talk with your children about where they would want to hibernate for the winter and what they would do if it was too noisy to sleep. In I Don’t Want to Go to Sleep, frog is disappointed to find out about all the fun things all the other animals do during the winter while he is supposed to be hibernating: drinking hot chocolate, sitting by the fireplace, playing in the snow. But owl explains that frogs would not do very well staying up during the winter. In the end, frog’s friends ask what they can do to reassure him and make him feel better about hibernating. Frog decides that his friends can sit with him in a big pile of mud and sleep all winter with him.
Songs:
Bear is Sleeping
(Tune: Frere Jacques)
Bear is sleeping, bear is sleeping
In a cave, in a cave
Wonder when he’ll wake up,
Wonder when he’ll wake up,
In the spring, in the spring.
Time to wake up, time to wake up
Sleepy bear, sleepy bear
It is springtime, it is springtime
Wake up now! Wake up now!
